Private investigator in the Mendrisiotto: Chiasso, Mendrisio and the border, services and costs

My office is in Chiasso, a stone's throw from the Italian border. The Mendrisiotto is not just one of the areas where I work: it is home, a territory I know street by street, from the Brogeda customs post to the Valle di Muggio, from the industrial areas of Stabio and Mendrisio to the villages on Monte San Giorgio.

I am the founder of Minerva.agency, the website of InSpace.Center LLC, an investigation agency licensed by the Canton of Ticino. I work alone, by choice: the person who meets you at the first consultation is the same person who carries out the investigation and signs the final report.

This page explains what I can do for you in the Mendrisiotto, what I don't do, what it costs and how an assignment works.

The Mendrisiotto through an investigator's eyes

A border region

The Mendrisiotto is Switzerland's southern gateway. A huge share of road traffic between Switzerland and Italy passes through the Chiasso-Brogeda motorway crossing; in Chiasso, Ponte Chiasso, Stabio-Gaggiolo, Novazzano and at the smaller crossings, the border is part of daily life. Every day thousands of cross-border workers arrive from the provinces of Como and Varese.

For someone in my line of work this means one thing: many cases have one half in Switzerland and the other in Italy. A debtor who lives a few kilometres away, but in another country. A company registered in Chiasso with its real business elsewhere. A family with assets and homes on both sides. A useful investigation has to know exactly where Swiss jurisdiction ends and which Italian sources can be lawfully consulted.

Logistics, trade and companies

Chiasso has always been a hub for freight forwarders, customs and trade. The industrial and commercial areas of Mendrisio, Stabio, Balerna, Coldrerio and Novazzano are home to logistics, fashion, trading and service companies, many with direct links to Italy. Alongside solid businesses there are also, as in any border region, shell companies, front offices and businesses that exist mainly on paper.

That is one of the reasons why checks on companies and business partners are among the most requested services in this region.

Changed municipalities, archives to read carefully

Between 2004 and 2013 the Mendrisiotto went through several municipal mergers: the city of Mendrisio absorbed municipalities such as Arzo, Besazio, Capolago, Genestrerio, Ligornetto, Meride, Rancate, Salorino and Tremona; in the Valle di Muggio the municipality of Breggia was created; Castel San Pietro took in the mountain hamlets. Today the district includes municipalities such as Balerna, Breggia, Castel San Pietro, Chiasso, Coldrerio, Mendrisio, Morbio Inferiore, Novazzano, Riva San Vitale, Stabio and Vacallo.

For anyone reconstructing a property, a past address or a family history, older documents carry the names of the municipalities as they were then. Forgetting this means losing traces.

Fast response

Being on the spot has a practical advantage: when a site visit, an address check or a visit to an office is needed, travel is minimal and timelines are shorter. In the Mendrisiotto I can be operational within minutes.

What I do in the Mendrisiotto

Tracing debtors and people between Switzerland and Italy

This is the most typical work in a border region: anyone with a debt, or who wants to disappear, often thinks crossing the border is enough. I establish where a person is, using lawful methods and a documented process, on Swiss sources and, within the permitted limits, on accessible Italian sources.

If you fear for someone's safety, the first call must go to the police. And if an adult has freely chosen to break off contact, their privacy must be respected.

Asset searches for Swiss and Italian creditors

Many Italian creditors have a debtor who lives or works in Switzerland, and vice versa. Before starting enforcement proceedings, knowing what exists and where, from real estate to shareholdings, avoids pointless costs. I explained how debt enforcement works in Switzerland in the guide for foreign creditors. I gather information: I do not carry out debt collection.

Checks on companies, suppliers and business partners

Before signing a contract, granting credit, paying a supplier in advance or going into business together: who is really behind it, what positions the people involved have held, which companies they have closed or taken into bankruptcy, whether the registered office is real or just a mailing address, and what official publications say in Switzerland and in Italy. In a region where a firm can be registered a few metres from the border with its business on the other side, this is often the investment with the best ratio between cost and risk avoided.

OSINT analysis

Structured research from open sources: registers, official publications, archives, the Swiss and Italian local press, digital traces, images. I explained in detail what an OSINT analyst does, and what they cannot do, in the article on what an OSINT analyst does.

Inheritance matters and asset reconstruction

Estates with property in Switzerland and in Italy, assets put in the name of a single heir, accounts drained in a parent's last years, heirs to be traced. I reconstruct the asset transfers that can be consulted and gather the facts useful to the lawyer, who alone can define the legal strategy, including in the light of the rules of both countries.

Family matters

In Switzerland infidelity has lost almost all weight in divorce proceedings, and surveillance only makes sense in particular cases, as I explain in the article on infidelity and divorce in Switzerland. If your goal is only confirmation, rather than information useful in proceedings, I will tell you before accepting the assignment.

Historical and documentary research

Family histories, emigration and the border, the provenance of documents, photographs and collector's items. The Mendrisiotto, a land of emigrants, smugglers and artists, has very rich archives. As a historical researcher and collector, this is a part of the work I particularly enjoy.

Cybersecurity training

Courses for staff at companies and professional practices on recognising modern scams: fake emails from the boss, fake changes to suppliers' bank details, phishing. Some basic rules are collected in the guide on how to create a secure password and turn on two-factor authentication.

What I don't do

  • I do not conduct criminal investigations. Crimes are a matter for the police and the Public Prosecutor's Office: that is where a complaint must be filed.
  • I do not carry out investigative work on Italian territory. My licence is from Ticino; in Italy, Italian law and Italian licences apply. Research on lawfully accessible Italian sources can, however, be carried out from Switzerland.
  • I do not obtain bank balances, phone records, chat contents, criminal records or medical files. They are not hard to obtain: they are unlawful to obtain.
  • I do not impersonate others, access other people's computer systems or record conversations unlawfully.
  • I do not monitor employees improperly. In Switzerland an employer may process an employee's data only where it concerns their suitability for the job or is necessary for performing the contract (art. 328b of the Code of Obligations). Any request concerning an employee must be assessed very carefully, often with a lawyer.
  • I do not replace your lawyer. I gather and document facts; legal strategy remains with your lawyer.

In Swiss civil proceedings, the court takes unlawfully obtained evidence into account only if the interest in establishing the truth prevails (art. 152 para. 2 of the Civil Procedure Code). Badly gathered evidence is not only likely to be useless: it can undermine the credibility of the whole file.

How much a private investigator in the Mendrisiotto costs

Arrangement When it is used How it works
Hourly rate Research and work with a variable scope From CHF 90 to CHF 180 per hour depending on complexity and risk, plus documented expenses
Flat fee Checks with a defined objective, such as verifying a company or finding an address Price agreed before work begins
Phases with approval Complex assignments, for example a cross-border case involving several people and assets One phase is completed, the result is reviewed together and you decide whether to continue

In the Mendrisiotto travel is very short: one of the advantages of having the office on the spot.

The first consultation is free. It is used to establish whether I can help you, and if I can't I will tell you straight away.

How an assignment works

  1. First consultation, confidential and free of charge. At my office in Chiasso, by phone or by video call. I listen, ask questions and assess legal feasibility, including for the Italian side of the case.
  2. Written investigation plan. Objective, method, estimated time, spending cap and billing criteria, before starting.
  3. Execution. Within the agreed limits. If something emerges that changes the picture, I contact you before going further.
  4. Final report. Mandate, method, chronology, sources, attachments and conclusions, with a clear separation between established facts and hypotheses. If needed, I deliver it directly to your lawyer, in Switzerland or in Italy.

On timing: a document check is usually completed within a few days. A cross-border case with sources in two countries takes longer. Work that depends on a person's movements has no fixed date, and you should be wary of anyone who guarantees one.

Frequently asked questions

Where is your office in the Mendrisiotto?

My office is in Chiasso, at Via Dante Alighieri 5. I meet clients there by appointment, or by phone or video call. From Chiasso I can reach Mendrisio, Balerna, Stabio, Novazzano, Vacallo and the rest of the region within minutes.

How much does a private investigator in the Mendrisiotto cost?

My hourly rate for investigative work ranges from CHF 90 to CHF 180 depending on complexity and risk, plus documented expenses. In the Mendrisiotto travel is minimal. Checks with a defined scope can be agreed for a flat fee, and before starting you always receive a written plan with a spending cap. The first consultation is free.

Can you carry out investigations in Italy too?

My licence is issued by the Canton of Ticino. Document and OSINT research on lawfully accessible Italian sources, such as registers and official publications, can be carried out from Switzerland. Activities on Italian territory are subject to Italian law and require a professional licensed in Italy: if that is needed, I will tell you beforehand and we will decide together how to proceed.

What are the most common cases in the Mendrisiotto?

In the Mendrisiotto I mainly receive cases with a cross-border dimension: tracing debtors between Switzerland and Italy, checks on companies and business partners, often based in the region's industrial and logistics areas, asset searches for Swiss and Italian creditors, OSINT analysis, and historical and documentary research.

Can I turn to a private investigator if I am the victim of a crime?

Crimes are a matter for the police and the Public Prosecutor's Office: that is where a complaint must be filed. A private investigator does not conduct criminal investigations. They can, however, lawfully gather and document facts useful in civil matters, for example in debt recovery, always in agreement with your lawyer.

How can I check that a private investigator is licensed in Ticino?

In Ticino, private investigation agencies must be authorised by the Canton and the list of authorised agencies is public. Before giving an assignment, ask which company the investigator invoices through and check that it appears on the list. InSpace.Center LLC is registered.
