Private investigator in Bellinzona and the Bellinzonese: services, method and costs
Bellinzona is the capital of the Canton of Ticino, the city of three UNESCO World Heritage castles and the first major station south of the Gotthard Base Tunnel. But for someone in my line of work it is above all an area with distinct characteristics: a city that merged thirteen municipalities in 2017, valleys where property is fragmented and passed down through generations, and a transport corridor that carries people and business towards German-speaking Switzerland.
I am the founder of Minerva.agency, the website of InSpace.Center LLC. I meet clients at my office in Chiasso, but I carry out assignments wherever the facts are, including Bellinzona and the Bellinzonese. I work alone, by choice: the person conducting the investigation is the same person you speak to at the first meeting.
This page explains when it makes sense to hire a private investigator in the Bellinzonese, what I can do, what I don't do, what it costs and how an assignment works.
The Bellinzonese through an investigator's eyes
Every region of Ticino has its typical cases. The Bellinzonese has four features that shape the way I work.
A new city with thirteen histories
On 2 April 2017 Bellinzona merged with twelve other municipalities: Camorino, Claro, Giubiasco, Gnosca, Gorduno, Gudo, Moleno, Monte Carasso, Pianezzo, Preonzo, Sant'Antonio and Sementina. The city's population more than doubled, to over 42,000.
For anyone reconstructing past events this has a practical consequence: documents, addresses and records from before 2017 carry the names of the former municipalities. Research into a property, a past address or a family history has to take this into account, or important traces will be missed.
Valleys, rustic buildings and fragmented land
From the Valle Morobbia to the slopes above Gudo and Sementina, from the hillsides above Claro and Gnosca to the valley floor: in the Bellinzonese it is common for a family to own, besides the house, rustici (old stone farm buildings), woodland, meadows and small plots inherited over generations, often jointly owned by several relatives.
It is precisely these assets that raise the most complicated questions when an estate is settled: who had the use of them, who sold them and at what price, who built or renovated, and with whose money.
The gateway to the Gotthard
With the opening of the Gotthard (2016) and Ceneri (2020) base tunnels, Bellinzona has become a central rail hub between Ticino and German-speaking Switzerland. People, jobs and assets move easily northwards.
For anyone looking for a debtor or an heir this is a practical point: people leaving the Bellinzonese do not always go south or to Italy, but often north of the Gotthard. Document and OSINT research follows the trail across the whole of Switzerland, and abroad when needed, within the limits of what can be lawfully consulted.
The seat of institutions
Bellinzona is home to the cantonal parliament, the cantonal government and most of the cantonal administration, as well as the Federal Criminal Court, which has sat in the city since 2004. There are also the district court and district offices, and many law and fiduciary firms work closely with these institutions.
That is why my reports are written to be read by a lawyer: facts, sources, attachments and a clear separation between what is established and what is hypothesis.
What I do in the Bellinzonese
Inheritance matters involving houses and land
This is one of the most frequent areas in this region. Lifetime gifts to only one child, rustic buildings sold without the other heirs knowing, land that has become buildable, accounts drained in a parent's last years.
What I do: I reconstruct transfers of ownership through the registers that can be consulted, analyse documents lawfully obtained by the heirs, gather material for property valuations, including historical images and building permits, and trace heirs and witnesses. The result is a file of facts for the lawyer. The Swiss rules on forced heirship and lifetime gifts are explained in the article on investigating lifetime gifts in Switzerland.
Tracing debtors, heirs and people who cannot be found
Someone who has left their address without notice, a debtor who has moved north of the Gotthard, an heir the family has lost touch with, a witness needed in a civil case. I establish where they are using lawful methods and a documented process.
An important point: if you fear for someone's safety, the first call must go to the police. And if an adult has freely chosen to break off contact, their privacy must be respected.
Searching for seizable assets
Starting enforcement proceedings against a debtor who appears to own nothing often achieves nothing. Knowing beforehand what exists and where, from real estate to shareholdings, helps the creditor and their lawyer decide whether and how to proceed. How debt enforcement works in Switzerland is explained in the guide for creditors. I gather information: I do not carry out debt collection.
Checks on companies, tradespeople and business partners
Before awarding major work to a firm, paying a deposit, going into partnership or signing a contract: I check who is behind a business, what positions the owners have held, whether they have previous bankruptcies, what official publications concern them, and whether the business really exists or only on paper. It is quick work, with a modest cost compared with the risk it avoids.
OSINT analysis
Structured research from open sources: registers, official publications, archives, the press, digital traces, images. What an OSINT analyst can do, and above all what they cannot do, is explained in the article on what an OSINT analyst does.
Historical, genealogical and documentary research
Reconstructing the history of a family, a house or an object, finding documents, verifying provenance. In the Bellinzonese, with its long history and its archives, this is a part of the work I particularly enjoy, as a historical researcher and collector.
Family matters
In Switzerland infidelity has lost almost all weight in divorce proceedings, and surveillance only makes sense in particular cases, as I explain frankly in the article on infidelity and divorce in Switzerland. If your goal is only confirmation, rather than information useful in proceedings, I will tell you before accepting the assignment.
Cybersecurity training
Courses for staff at companies, professional practices and organisations on recognising modern scams: fake emails from the boss, payment fraud, phishing. Some basic rules are collected in the guide on how to create a secure password and turn on two-factor authentication.
What I don't do
This is where the industry promises the most, and where I prefer to be clear.
- I do not conduct criminal investigations. Crimes are a matter for the police and the Public Prosecutor's Office: that is where a complaint must be filed.
- I do not obtain bank balances, phone records, chat contents, criminal records or medical files. They are not hard to obtain: they are unlawful to obtain.
- I do not impersonate others, access other people's computer systems or record conversations unlawfully.
- I do not take on cases that require a team, such as surveillance of several people for weeks. In that case I refer you to a suitable firm.
- I do not replace your lawyer. I gather and document facts; legal strategy remains with your lawyer.
These are not limits of convenience. In Swiss civil proceedings, the court takes unlawfully obtained evidence into account only if the interest in establishing the truth prevails (art. 152 para. 2 of the Civil Procedure Code). Badly gathered evidence risks being useless and undermining the credibility of the whole file.
How much a private investigator in Bellinzona costs
| Arrangement | When it is used | How it works |
|---|---|---|
| Hourly rate | Research and work with a variable scope | From CHF 90 to CHF 180 per hour depending on complexity and risk, plus documented travel and expenses |
| Flat fee | Checks with a defined objective, such as verifying a firm or finding an address | Price agreed before work begins |
| Phases with approval | Complex assignments, for example reconstructing an estate | One phase is completed, the result is reviewed together and you decide whether to continue |
Many tasks, such as document, OSINT and archive research, require no travel and therefore involve no travel costs. When on-site work is needed, travel in the Bellinzonese is shown separately and documented.
The first consultation is free. It is used to establish whether I can help you, and if I can't I will tell you straight away.
How an assignment works
- First consultation, confidential and free of charge. At my office in Chiasso, by phone or by video call. I listen, ask questions and assess legal feasibility.
- Written investigation plan. Objective, method, estimated time, spending cap and billing criteria, before starting.
- Execution. Within the agreed limits. If something emerges that changes the picture, I contact you before going further.
- Final report. Mandate, method, chronology, sources, attachments and conclusions, with a clear separation between established facts and hypotheses. If needed, I deliver it directly to your lawyer.
On timing: a document check is usually completed within a few days. Reconstructing an estate with many properties and transfers may take weeks. Work that depends on a person's movements has no fixed date, and you should be wary of anyone who guarantees one.
How to choose a private investigator in the Bellinzonese
Whether you choose me or a colleague, five checks always apply:
| Check | Why |
|---|---|
| Cantonal authorisation | In Ticino the list of authorised agencies is public. InSpace.Center LLC is registered |
| The invoicing company | A trade name is not a company name: ask who you are signing the mandate with |
| No guaranteed results | No serious professional guarantees a result, or access to bank, phone or medical data |
| Written mandate | Objective, method and spending cap must be clear before starting |
| Final report | A good report states the source of every item and separates facts from hypotheses |

Frequently asked questions
Do you work in Bellinzona if your office is in Chiasso?
Yes. I meet clients at my office in Chiasso, or by phone or video call, and carry out the assignment wherever it is needed: in Bellinzona, in the districts of the new city and in the municipalities of the Bellinzonese. Document and OSINT research, moreover, does not depend on distance.
How much does a private investigator in Bellinzona cost?
My hourly rate for investigative work ranges from CHF 90 to CHF 180 depending on complexity and risk, plus documented travel and expenses. Checks with a defined scope can be agreed for a flat fee. Before starting you always receive a written plan with a spending cap. The first consultation is free.
What are the most common cases in the Bellinzonese?
In the Bellinzonese I mainly receive requests involving inheritance disputes with houses and land, tracing debtors and people who have changed address, often moving north of the Gotthard, checks on companies, tradespeople and business partners, OSINT analysis, and historical and documentary research on families and properties.
How can I check that a private investigator is licensed in Ticino?
In Ticino, private investigation agencies must be authorised by the Canton and the list of authorised agencies is public. Before giving an assignment, ask which company the investigator invoices through and check that it appears on the list. InSpace.Center LLC is registered.
Can I turn to a private investigator if I am the victim of a crime?
Crimes are a matter for the police and the Public Prosecutor's Office: that is where a complaint must be filed. A private investigator does not conduct criminal investigations. They can, however, lawfully gather and document facts useful in civil matters, for example in an inheritance dispute or debt recovery, always in agreement with your lawyer.
Can a private investigator obtain bank statements or phone records?
No. Bank balances, phone records, chat contents, criminal records and medical files cannot be lawfully obtained by a private investigator. Anyone who promises them exposes themselves and the client to criminal consequences and produces material that may well be unusable in court.
