Private Investigator in Lugano: When You Need One, How I Work and What to Expect
Lugano is Ticino's business hub: banks, fiduciaries, law firms, trading and service companies, a lively property market and thousands of people crossing the border every day for work. It is natural that a large share of the requests I receive come from here. And they have a clear profile: a company to vet before signing, a debtor registered at a fiduciary's address who then disappears, an inheritance where the numbers do not add up, a business partner behaving strangely.
I am the founder of Minerva.agency, the website of InSpace.Center LLC. I meet clients at my office in Chiasso, a short distance from Lugano, but a significant part of my assignments take place in Lugano and the surrounding area: the work is done where the facts are, not where the desk is. I work alone, by choice: the person who runs the investigation is the person you speak to.
This page explains plainly when it makes sense to hire a private investigator in Lugano, what I can do, what I do not do, what it costs and how an assignment works.
Why an investigator in Lugano is not the same as anywhere else
Every area has its typical cases. Lugano has some features that change the way the work is done.
- A very high density of companies and registered addresses. Many companies are domiciled at fiduciaries or professional firms. An address in the commercial register says little about where the people and the business really are. You need to know how to read the register, official publications and open sources, and how to cross-check them.
- A strong cross-border dimension. People and assets often move between Lugano, the rest of Switzerland and Italy. A useful investigation must know where Swiss jurisdiction ends and which sources can be lawfully consulted across the border.
- The Canton's judicial centre. Lugano is home to the Court of Appeal and the Public Prosecutor's Office, as well as the district court and debt enforcement offices. Many of my reports end up on the desks of Lugano law firms: that is why they are written to be read by a lawyer and, if necessary, by a judge.
- A varied territory. From the city centre to the districts created by municipal mergers, from Collina d'Oro to the Malcantone, from Capriasca to the valleys: knowing distances, access routes and local habits makes a difference when an assignment moves into the field.
What I do in the Lugano area
My areas of work are the same throughout Ticino, but in Lugano some carry more weight than others.
Tracing debtors and missing persons
This is the work I receive most often, typically referred by law firms. Someone who moved without notice, a former partner who does not answer, a debtor registered at a fiduciary's address. I establish where they are, using lawful methods and a documented trail.
Searching for seizable assets in support of debt enforcement
A payment order against a debtor with no assets achieves nothing. Knowing in advance what exists and where, from property to shareholdings, changes the strategy of the creditor and their lawyer. I described how debt enforcement works in Switzerland in my guide for creditors. I gather information: I do not carry out debt collection.
Due diligence on companies and business partners
Before signing a contract, extending credit, going into business with someone or buying a company: who the people behind a company really are, which positions they have held, which companies they have closed, which public proceedings concern them, what reputation they have. In Lugano, where many companies exist mainly on paper, this is often the work with the best ratio between cost and risk avoided.
Inheritance matters and asset reconstruction
Lifetime gifts, property put in one child's name, accounts emptied in a parent's final years, doubtful wills. I reconstruct asset transfers and gather the facts the lawyer needs. I covered the topic, with the Swiss rules on reserved portions, in the article on forced heirship and lifetime gifts.
OSINT analysis
Structured research from open sources: registers, official publications, archives, digital traces, images. It is the part of the profession that has changed most in recent years, and the one where the difference between a professional and an amateur is most visible: anyone can search for a name, few can document the trail in a way that withstands challenge.
Family matters
In couple matters, infidelity in Switzerland has lost almost all weight in divorce proceedings, and surveillance makes sense only in particular cases. I wrote about it frankly in the article on infidelity and divorce in Switzerland. If your goal is peace of mind rather than useful information, I will tell you before accepting the assignment.
Historical and documentary research
Reconstruction of family histories, archives, and the provenance of objects and documents, for private clients, institutions and scholars.
Cybersecurity training
Courses for staff at companies and professional firms on recognising modern scams, from the fake email from the managing director to payment fraud. In a financial centre like Lugano, it is often the cheapest way to avoid a loss.
What I do not do
I say this clearly, because it is the point on which the industry promises most.
- I do not obtain bank balances, phone records, chat contents, criminal records or medical files. They are not hard to get: they are unlawful to get. Anyone who promises them is exposing you along with themselves.
- I do not pose as someone else to obtain information, access other people's computer systems or record conversations unlawfully.
- I do not take cases that require a team, such as surveillance of several people for weeks. In that case I refer you to a suitable firm.
- I do not replace your lawyer. I gather and document facts; legal strategy stays with your lawyer.
These are not limits of convenience. In Swiss civil proceedings, the court considers unlawfully obtained evidence only if the interest in establishing the truth prevails (art. 152 para. 2 CPC). Badly gathered material not only risks being useless: it can undermine the credibility of the entire file.
How much does a private investigator in Lugano cost?
No serious professional can give you a price before knowing what you are looking for. But you can insist on understanding how the price is built.
- Hourly rate: from CHF 90 to CHF 180 per hour depending on the complexity and risk of the work, plus travel and out-of-pocket expenses.
- Flat fee for assignments with a clearly defined scope, such as an address search or due diligence on a specific subject.
- Phases with interim approval for complex assignments: one phase is completed, we review the result together and you decide whether to continue.
For clients in the Lugano area, the distance from Chiasso makes little difference: travel is short and always itemised and documented separately. The full terms are published on the rates page.
The first consultation is free. It is when I understand whether I can help you and you understand whether you want me to.
How an assignment works
- First consultation, confidential and free. At my office in Chiasso, by phone or by video call. I listen, ask questions and assess legal feasibility.
- Written investigation plan. Objective, method, estimated timing, spending cap and billing criteria, before starting.
- Execution. Within the agreed limits. If something emerges that changes the picture, I call you before going further.
- Final report. Assignment, method, chronology of findings, attachments and conclusions, with a clear separation between what is established and what is hypothesis. If needed, I deliver it directly to your lawyer.
On timing: a documentary assignment is usually completed within a few days. Work that depends on a person's movements depends on that person, and nobody can guarantee you a fixed date.
How to choose a private investigator in Lugano
Whether you choose me or a colleague, there are five checks I recommend you always make:
- Check the cantonal authorisation. In Ticino the list of authorised agencies is public and checking takes a few minutes. InSpace.Center LLC is registered.
- Ask which company they invoice through. A trade name is not a company name.
- Be wary of guaranteed results and of access to bank, phone or medical data.
- Insist on a written mandate, with objective, method and spending cap.
- Ask what the final report looks like: a good report separates facts from hypotheses and states the source of every piece of information.
Contact
If you are in Lugano or the surrounding area and have a case to assess, you can find my services and contact details on the website. The first consultation is free and confidential: by the end you will know whether the case is feasible, and if it is not, I will tell you straight away.

Frequently asked questions
Do you work in Lugano if your office is in Chiasso?
Yes. Chiasso and Lugano are close: I meet clients at my office in Chiasso, or by phone or video call, and carry out the assignment wherever it is needed, in Lugano and throughout the surrounding area. A significant part of my work takes place there.
How much does a private investigator in Lugano cost?
My hourly rate for investigative work ranges from CHF 90 to CHF 180 depending on complexity and risk, plus documented travel and out-of-pocket expenses. Assignments with a clearly defined scope can be agreed at a flat fee. Before starting you always receive a written plan with a spending cap. The first consultation is free.
How can I check that a private investigator is licensed in Ticino?
In Ticino private investigation agencies must be authorised by the Canton, and the list of authorised agencies is public. Before giving an assignment, ask which company the investigator invoices through and check that it appears on the list. InSpace.Center LLC is registered.
What are the most common cases in the Lugano area?
In the Lugano area I mostly receive requests to trace untraceable debtors, search for seizable assets in support of debt enforcement proceedings, carry out due diligence on companies and business partners, and perform OSINT analysis and asset reconstructions in inheritance matters, often referred by law firms and fiduciaries.
Will information about my case remain confidential?
Yes. No information leaves the file without your consent. As I work alone, the number of people who know about your case is one. Even the first contact can take place discreetly, away from offices and normal hours if necessary.
Can a private investigator obtain bank statements or phone records?
No. Bank balances, phone records, chat contents, criminal records and medical files cannot be lawfully obtained by a private investigator. Anyone who promises them exposes both themselves and the client to criminal liability and produces material that risks being inadmissible in court.
